Paint for Polio
Our second annual Paint for Polio event to raise funds for polio eradication was a great success. It was a creative and fun way to increase awareness about polio and to help reach our goal of stamping polio out for good. Thanks to everyone who came and supported.
 
Pub N Paint for Polio
Join the Rotary Club of Edmonton Whyte Avenue for an entertaining and fun guided paint night to raise funds for polio eradication. Come follow along with step-by-step instructions as you sip on your $5 pints & mimosas at Rooster Kitchen & Bar (10732 82 Avenue Northwest Edmonton). This is designed to be an inclusive, fun, non-intimidating atmosphere to create art in good company. All supplies are included, just bring yourself and be ready to have a good time!

Creating Opportunities Through KIVA Microloans
One of the ways that the Rotary Club of Edmonton Whyte Avenue creates international opportunities is by making microloans through an organization called Kiva. Billions of people around the world do not have access to traditional finance and Kiva loans give people the power and resources to build the life they choose. By crowdfunding smaller amounts—called microloans—more borrowers get funded. Through Kiva, we find a person around the world who we want to support, decide how much we want to contribute toward the loan, get repaid, and then lend the money again. The initial $700 we put into Kiva has been loaned more than three times over to people in 44 different countries and we just made our 125th loan!

Old Scona Academic School Tour
Some of us went to Old Scona Academic School last Tuesday where we given a personal tour and told of the history and current goals of the school by Principal Will Deys.  We learned of the importance of this school's past, the high accomplishments of the students past and present and the esteemed reputation Old Scona holds.  We also learned the students like to volunteer so hopefully in the near future we'll have a chance to meet some of the students in person.  A big Thank You to principal Will Deys for the great presentation and tour.

Welcome To Our New Members Dr. Saimah Khan & Dr. Phuc-Than Nguyen
On Tuesday, August 1, 2023 we inducted two new members to our club.  We are so pleased to welcome new members Dr. Saimah Khan ND (AB) (ON) , MD (BELIZE), RNHS and Dr. Phuc-Than Nguyen ND (AB) , MD (IMG_USA), CBP!  These two amazing people  have already played an important role in our club for quite as while as they have joined our meetings, volunteered with us and taken part in our Fellowship events.  Each of them is a remarkable person who is dedicated to the health and well being of those in their community.  It is an honour to have you as members of the Rotary Club of Edmonton Whyte Avenue!

This year's Rotary Presidential theme is "Create Hope in the World." Rotary International President Gordon R. McInally calls for Rotary to create hope in the world by working for peace and mental wellbeing. He urges members to engage in tough conversations and earn the trust that’s necessary to realize these values
International Projects We Support
Project Amigo Update
On Tuesday, November 16, we had Past District 5370 Governor and Canadian Intermediary for Project Amigo Canada Society, Elly Contreras-Vermeulen, join our meeting as our speaker live from Colima Mexico. Elly provided an update on the work that Project Amigo is doing and how the COVID-19 pandemic has affected their efforts. Project Amigo Canada Society helps lift youth out of poverty through education and focuses on supporting youth of lower income families in Suchitlan, Colima, Mexico. 
For the past three years, the Whyte Avenue Rotary Club has been sponsoring a student through Project Amigo, and at the meeting we got a chance to meet Miguel via Zoom and to ask him questions. Miguel is in Grade 6 and loves Spanish class, reading, playing basketball, and his favourite food is pizza. It was wonderful to make the connection with Miguel. One of our members, Marilyn Mucha, will be participating in a Project Amigo volunteer week this winter, so we will soon get to learn more about Project Amigo and Miguel through her volunteer experience. Update: Project Amigo Sponsor a Child
Last year Whyte Avenue Rotary sponsored a child in Colima, Mexico through the Project Amigo Canada Society. The $135 donation provided Miguel with the tools he needed to be successful, such as shoes, clothing and educational services. The sponsorship also helped him broaden his horizons and to connect with people beyond his own communities with the annual “Day at the Beach” trip and at Project Amigo’s volunteer-driven Christmas Fiesta. We are pleased to renew Miguel's scholarship for another year.
Update from the Combined Rotary Women's School
Whyte Avenue Rotary partnered with the Amarok Society and several other District 5370 Rotary Clubs to build the Combined Rotary Women's School in Bangladesh. In the school's latest update, they describe their struggles and challenges during the COVID-19 pandemic.

African Region Declared Free of Wild Polio!
The World Health Organization (WHO) on 25 August announced that transmission of the wild poliovirus has officially been stopped in all 47 countries of its African region. This is a historic and vital step toward global eradication of polio, which is Rotary’s top priority.

KIVA Microfinance Loans
One of Rotary International’s six area’s of focus is growing local economies by “strengthening local entrepreneurs and community leaders, particularly women, in impoverished communities.” The Rotary Club of Whyte Avenue is working on this area of focus by providing microloans through kiva.org.
 
Stan Bissell shared the story of Thúy, a female entrepreneur living in a remote rural community in Vietnam, who the club has supported with a microloan.

Event Cancellation Policy
Monies for events will be refunded (less an administration fee as well as any loss incurred by the District for contractual issues incurred by the District) provided the request is made at least 7 days prior to the event.
 
The refund will be processed after all incurred costs have been received and processed.
 
Normally, 10% of the fees paid will be withheld to cover these charges.
 
No refunds will be made within 7 days of the event. 
 
There will be no refund for district dues or donations.
